What We Did for National Geographic

National Geographic Store requested assistance with their e-commerce presence which was built using IBM Net.Commerce/WebSphere. We met with the Store's Marketing Director and E-Commerce Director to start the analysis process. We learned that they wanted:

  1. an updated store with a new look & feel that better represented the National Geographic brand
  2. to have better quality images of their products
  3. a customized shopping flow
  4. a customized checkout flow
  5. to have better rankings on Google for all of their categories of products
  6. to move to a whole new e-commerce platform

We also analyzed how they stacked up against their competition and formulated a plan:

  1. The design we created featured the National Geographic logo and mimiced the brand style guide used by the .com site to emphasize the brand on the store.
  2. We designed the site with an abundance of National Geographic photography and a mix of white, golds, browns, and blacks to give that clean, professional National Geographic look.
  3. We photoshopped all images to create a more professional look.
  4. We met with their suppliers and fullfillment teams to learn more about the shopping and checkout requirements and constraints and then helped build a more intuitive customer-friendly, full-featured shopping and checkout process with cross-selling and up-selling features.
  5. We reworked all of their SEO features, marketed the site, and promoted it on google. We also created an affiliate program to create a new marketing channel.
  6. We also created a 200 page quality control checklist and testing plan for the new store roll-out.

National Geographic results included:

  1. a significant boost on Google rankings
  2. an 8% increase in sales
  3. a new store platform built within budget
  4. a successful roll-out of the new store with no downtime during switchover
